The seventy-second day of spring, the eighth Turn of the Tenth Interval.

** Nicholarin just set the @party!  Type @party to check it out! **
It's time for Ista Hold's amateur archery contest! Rumor has it there's a small clutch of firelizard eggs as prizes. Assemble at the Gather Meadow!  -- entered by Nicholarin on 2008-06-22 16:31 MOO Time. (15 seconds)

Gather Meadow
You are standing in a wide grassy area that spreads out before you. It rises gradually to meet the hold valley in the west. A road continues through the field over the rise to the Hold's cliff and comes down in the north to the main gather square. To the south you can see a small waterfall tumbling down the hillside, which gathers into a stream and runs toward the sea.
  It is a spring afternoon.
You see a wagonmaster, Dilse Caravan Wagon 1, Dilse Caravan Wagon 3, Dilse Caravan Wagon 4, Dilse Caravan Wagon 5, Dilse Supply Wagon 1, Dilse Supply Wagon 2, Sweet Champagne, Istan Wagon One, Archery Target, Bow, Beverage Tent, Games Tent, Seacraft Tent, Dolphincraft Pavilion, Smith Booth, Harper's Tent, WeaverCraft Tent, and Healer First Aid Station here.
Nicholarin and Erarei are here.
Obvious exits:
Beach     Runner Track     Gather Square     Hold Pastures     Hold Valley     Gardens     Barracks
You enter the west end of the gather meadow.

The Hold's lieutenant of the guard, Hensa, is a handsome man in his late thirty's. His Gather best, trail-worn leather and off-white linen, is worse off than the typical standard. But he is enthusiastic for the event he will just host. "Welcome to our amateur archery contest! The winner is to be recruited for the Lord Holder's bodyguards." His basso voice skips a second. "Just kidding. Those ranks are full from last Turn."

Alesa gives a laugh. "Oh what a shame, I would have quit from being a Harper in an instant" she winks to indicate that she is in jest with her statement. Brushing her hair away from her ear, she wipes her hand across her forehead to make sure some perspiration does not drip into her eye. The sun is making her wish to make a quick stop at the beverage tent, but she will wait until the contest is over, she decides.

Istan candidates have made their way onto the scene, followed dutifully by a rider chaperone and escort. Sobene, true to her nature, pushes and shoves her way through the crowd, coming closer to the archery set-up with brows arched disdainfully. "What's this?" Somewhere, Risya should be around as well.
Myrdin walks in from the valley.

Risya follows behind, yes, looking about curiously, "I believe it is one of the contests? At least, I do not see any harpers making music, or dancing?" There is distinct relief at that particular statement, as she still hasn't tried to kill Myrdin yet.

Hansa says "Here are the rules of the contest: each person shoots three times. So person A, person B, person C, then we repeat two more times. Gold is the center, green is on the outside with the other dragon colors in between. Score from 5-1 points according to color. Highest person wins first choice, second highest second choice, etc. Let's see, the Harper should be first since she arrived first, then the candidates."

Alesa spies a bow and picks it up. She perks her ear to the comment about harpers. "Ah but we have such a performance planned for later!" she grins. "Just waiting for Masters Kurt and Ylisa to bring more supplies for the Harper booth and then we will begin." She turns her attention back to the bow and strings an arrow. Carefully she draws back, squinting one eye at the target, trying her best to hit her goal.

Alesa nocks an arrow, pulls it back and shoots it with a slow delibrate motion. The arrow is brushed slightly by the wind. A frown is seen as the arrow strikes blue.

Sobene is next! Who cares if it wasn't exactly her turn, persay, as the candidate has already grabbed up an available bow, putting an arrow in place and cocking her arm back, pulling the string taut. Aim is taken and then the arrow is let loose. "Yeah, a contest. I'm going to win." Someone's cocky.

Sobene fires her arrow quickly without thinking about it. The arrow flys straight and true. A slight sigh is heard as this arrow makes brown.

".. are you sure we should be doin' this? I've never shot.. ah, I hold it here, and.. pull this back?" Risya asks of Sobene, turning to ask her fellow Candidate, without looking to see what she's aiming for, lets go of the string (and arrow).

Risya nocks an arrow, pulls it back and shoots it with a slow delibrate motion. The arrow is brushed slightly by the wind and ends up sailing off beyond the target.

Myrdin is moving about the crowd, scanning for any lady that finds herself without a partner. He's not having much luck though, so it's with a slightly damp demeanor that he finds himself moving over to the archery range. He's just in time to hear Risya's comment about the lack of music. "Don't worry, Ris, I can call over a few Harpers so we can get to that dance." He offers the girl a waggling of an eye, so charming. But then people are shooting arrows and he can't help but join in. "Me next!"

Myrdin nocks an arrow, pulls it back and shoots it with a slow delibrate motion. The arrow is brushed slightly by the wind, and  strikes the blue circle solidly.

Alesa fires her arrow quickly without thinking about it. The arrow flys straight and true, and  sails off beyond the target.

"Long as we don't kill someone I don't see why not," Sobene says with an apparent smirk in Risya's direction, shoulders rolling back as though to warm herself up for her next try. She's in the lead! "Told you guys I was going to win. How many times do we shoot?" Myrdin's arrival prompts a half-hearted wave in his direction before the girl directs her attention wholly to the contest ahead. When it's her turn again, Sobene prepares herself much as she did before and lets arrow fly once more towards the target.

Abrienna walks in from the Main Beach.

Myrdin catches Sobene's wave and returns it much more eagerly. "Ah, better luck next time!" He says when her arrow misses the mark, moving his arms about a bit as he waits for his turn. "Hey, Risya. Oh, not too bad." He comments on her shot before taking up the bow and readying it. He sticks his tongue out a bit, green eyes trying to pierce the spot before the arrow does. Finally he lets it go, hoping for the best.

Myrdin fires his arrow quickly without thinking about it. The arrow is brushed slightly by the wind. A frown is seen as the arrow strikes blue.

Alesa furrows her brow. "The wind seems to be interfering with the contest a bit..." she trails off, determined to still try her best anyway.Of course she'd be able to see better if a gust of wind hadn't knocked her headband into her eyes. She pushes it back up her face, annoyed at the inconvenience."Well once more, I suppose, wish me luck!" she says.

Alesa fires her arrow quickly without thinking about it. The arrow is brushed slightly by the wind. A frown is seen as the arrow strikes blue.

"If you'd pick up your feet you wouldn't fall nearly as much," is the response that Risya gets from Sobene, complete with a snide little under the breath snicker. "We have one more round, right?" And look, Sobene's still winning! This makes her look extremely pleased indeed. Well, crap. Now she isn't, anymore. Myrdin's shot prompts a glower to cross the candidate's face before she shrugs it off. "Gonna hit gold next, just you see." Alesa is definately not wished any luck; instead, Sobene prepares herself again and, as soon as the other is finished, lets loose of the arrow, sending it towards the target.

Sobene nocks an arrow, pulls it back and shoots it with a slow delibrate motion. The arrow flys straight and true. A mumble of disgust is heard when the arrow strikes green.

"Clearly, you've never seen me in the Livin' Cavern when it's busy. I bounce off tables like a marble down the stairs...." Risya replies to Sobene, self-humor evident, despite the snicker, before shaking her head, "We-all are horrible, that's all there is to it. Well, I'm horrible, you three a great deal less so.." the seamstress replies, before re-notching the bow, and trying for her third and last time.

Risya nocks an arrow, pulls it back and shoots it with a slow delibrate motion. The arrow flys straight and true, and it sails off beyond the target.

Alesa spies a familiar face. "Master Kurt!" she exclaims. "Seems after the archery competition the crowd here is in the mood for a little music making..perhaps we should oblige them?" she grins. Upon spying the next missed target by the arrow she starts up. So /many/ missed shots!

S'eron wanders in from the Main Beach.

Abrienna arrives, taking slow steps so that her dress flows perfectly. An eyebrow is arched up high for no reason in particular as she takes in the surroundings and the people. Eyes land on particular people and groups, staying in one place no longer than a few seconds. Seeing no one that she really feels like engaging in conversation with, Abrienna helps herself to a glass of wine before she starts people watching again.

When his arrow strikes the blue target again, Myrdin smiles broadly, looking over his shoulder to see who was watching. "Did you see? Not bad, huh?" Yup, he's a happy camper. "Good luck!" He says enthusiastically, but after the arrow has been launched, seeing that she hit the same color as him he whistles. "Seems to be the color of choice today. Except you, but green is pretty good too." That goes to Sobene as he preps himself for his final shot. "Nah, you're just as good, Ris!" But it's his turn now and so he goes.

Myrdin nocks an arrow, pulls it back and shoots it with a slow delibrate motion. The arrow flies straight and true. It strikes the blue circle solidly.

Lieutenant Hensa privately makes mental corrections on the archers' posture, sighting, grip. By now such behavior is an ingrained habit. But he appreciates their enthusiasm with around cycle of powerful claps. "Will the candidate on the end and the harper shoot a fourth arrow -- we have a tie." And the crowd goes wild. Or almost.

Alesa starts up, surprised. She wasn't that clear on the scoring for the game but obviously she hadn't done that badly? "I'm in a tie then am I?" She stretches, standing up straight and letting the wind cool her face. "I'll try my best!" she says, not really paying attention to the fact that she may have repeated herself and it was not the most eloquent of wordings she could have used. Patting/stroking the bow she whispers "come on, lets get a high score!". To get on with it, she notches the bow, focuses mentally and visually on the target and /just/ lets go.

Alesa nocks an arrow, pulls it back and shoots it with a slow delibrate motion. The arrow flys straight and true. A slight sigh is heard as this arrow makes brown.

Why is everyone being so nice to her? Sobene looks vaguely confused before she shakes her head, eyeing the arrow as it thumps securely into the target. "Eh, looks like I lost." And there's goes all her previous bravado and confidence, though she does smirk once more at Risya. "Hmm, I've seen. I just don't understand. Coordination is key to life." Once she's pointed out by Hensa, Sobene's brows shoot right up. "Me again? Awesome." The bow is found again and another arrow let loose just to ensure either a second or third place.

Sobene fires her arrow quickly without thinking about it. The arrow is brushed slightly by the wind. A slight sigh is heard as this arrow makes brown.

Zilurana runs in from the Main Beach.

"Well, I've got the hand-eye coordination needed for sewin' - other types have never been that important before.." Ris says, before falling silent as the other two girls stand up to have another go. Not shouting like most of the crowd, she does clap enthusiastically for both.
"Hey, blue again! Guess it's my lucky color." Myrdin announces happily, running a hand through his hair as he examines the exact spot his arrow hit.

When Hensa speaks however he glances over, taking in the man's appearance as he calls Alesa and Sobene to shoot again. "Tie again?" He says with a laugh, shaking his head a bit as they both hit the brown marks.

Istans, Bollians, Telgari, all provide tremendous praise for the matters of coincidence from two young women. A wide grin lights up Hensa's face. "Again we have a tie! It seems both of you want another firelizard terribly." At a lower octave, "I sure can't see why..." rubbing his bronze vigorously. "I say another round!"

Alesa grins."Oh, who /couldn't/ use another flying stomach with wings who chews your hair to wake you up in the morning!"Again she strikes the usual stance to begin her attack on the target. "one more?" she whispers to the bow as if it was an animate object. She chooses and arrow carefully and again strings the bow and focuses on the target.

Alesa fires her arrow quickly without thinking about it. The arrow flys straight and true. This arrow strikes the blue circle solidly.

"Tie... again." Sobene's less than pleased with this turn of events, hand passing slowly over her chin in thought. "Huh. Another round then." A tip of her head towards Alesa indicates the other's turn first, Sobene taking the time to ready her bow again. When it's her turn, the arrow flies again.

Sobene fires her arrow quickly without thinking about it. The arrow is brushed slightly by the wind. This arrow just misses the blue circle when it hits green.

Guardsman Hensa dispatches a young recruit with three egg holders. First choice, after Myrdin, is provided to Alesa for narrowly beating Sobene. The latters gets her choice out of the remaining two eggs and Risya, who luck wasn't with this time, gets an reward for trying her darndest.

Myrdin is ecstatic, nodding to the recruit happily as he selects his egg. "Thanks! Can't believe I won, haven't used a bow in turns." He says as he places the egg carefully in his vest inner pocket. He grins over at his fellow competitors, curious to see what they select. "I never thought that tie battle would end, you guys sure are good." But his mind soon moves onto the next thing, and that involves Risya. "Hey, maybe we can get the Harpers to strike up a tune and have that dance." Sure is persistent.

Alesa thrusts her hand up in the air and gives a shout when she sees she has won the second place in the tournament. "Hurrah!" she cries, but then enthusistically shakes the hands of her competitors. "Well done, Myrdin, Sobene" she says. "It was very entertaining and fun to compete with you both." She eyes the eggs carefully and chooses one that has a green hue. "Oh, this egg is /beautiful/" she says "I think this is the one for me". Carefully, she cradles the egg in her arms, then grabs a soft piece of spare fabric rag within her pack in which to wrap it.

"Not good enough." Sobene's definately a little sour at her loss but she does bob her head in Myrdin's direction. "Good job," is eventually said, a bit grudgingly. Her egg is taken and then carefully put into a pocket. "Looks like you guys got a new buddy." And one that she's probably going to want to strangle. "Thanks." That's to Alesa.

Personally congratulating each of the several participants, Hensa freely gives his hand and shoulder clouts for the males. "That was a good demonstration, all of you! If you keep on practicin' you can try for the expert class next Turn, hm? Or," slyly, "at the very least learn how to pick your teeth with the tip." For all those less capable archers.

Risya, a bit disappointed that she's dead last, still looks pleased enough for everyone, before Myrdin makes that determined offer, "Well, I'm not sure about that - at least, not right away. Maybe you might be askin' the other two winners to dance first? One, at least, is probably going to not have much chances for dancing, soon enough." To Hensa, she asks in the spirit of that last comment, "Think I could be learnin' how to sew with one, maybe in leather?"

"It's just fun and games, we're /all/ winners!" Myrdin announces eagerly, placing the bow back where it belongs. "That sure did build up an appetite though, wonder where I can get a good wherry kebob." He rubs the palms of his hands together, eyes wandering to the tents nearby. Hensa gets a silly grin but then there's the comment about teeth picking and what's worse a reluctance to dance. "Course not, you're first in line because I asked you first."

Hensa switches a winsome grin to Risya when her hand is clasped. "Aye, you could do that, but I myself don't host the sewing competition." The recruit that distributed the eggs is then granted the task of removing and collecting the dull-tipped arrows out of the six targets. "And safe-keeping for that egg," bidding Risya, and everyone, a high parting wave.

Risya, thinking that a ribbon or some other frippery would come her way for dead-last, is presented with a small egg, yellow-lily in hue. A bright smile is given the gifter, before she carefully tucks away the item. "Thank you, sir..." she practically beams, before turning to Mydrin, who gets the second half of that. "Well, is it safe to be doin' so with these? And...er.." a sudden frown appears, ".. I know folks already have no-few, but.. are we allowed to be having a new one during all this?" she asks her fellow Candidate, drifting over.
